The Independent
History
The Independent is an independent daily newspaper that was founded in 1986 in London, UK. Andreas Whittam Smith, Stephen Glover, and Matthew Symonds wanted to create a newspaper that held no political bias. For this reason, they decided together to establish The Independent.
As soon as the newspaper launched, it became extremely popular, with daily sales from The Independent quickly matching that of the other big newspapers. This led to the team deciding to launch a Sunday only edition - known as The Independent on Sunday - in 1990.
Throughout its time, The Independent has changed a number of times. This has involved changing from a broadsheet edition to a tabloid edition and more. By the year 2010, Alexander Lebedev, a Russian businessman, had acquired The Independent.
Today, The Independent has received an abundance of praise for its use of graphic design, disclosure of sources, honest crediting, and artistic photographs. In 2008, the newspaper began publishing in colour which brought about the further appeal.
Though The Independent is a digital newspaper only now, it continues to be one of the most popular newspapers in the UK, with a reach of almost 20,000,000 a month.
